Free Child Seat Fittings at VMC

Tuesday, July 10th, 2007

The 2nd Wednesday of every month - that would Wednesday the 11th this month - Valley Medical Center is hosting a new free service for the fitting of child safety seats at the VMC north garage. They will help you fit a new seat, or inspect the one you have already installed. The service is offered from 5 - 6:30 PM and is free, although “donations are excepted”.

Tolls on the Valley Freeway?

Monday, July 9th, 2007

This was the first I had heard of it, but it’s been the works for a while. The concept is to change the carpoll lane from an HOV lane on Hwy 167 (aka the Valley Freeway) to an HOT lane. That would be “High-Occupancy/Toll” lane. If you are in a carpool or bus, you can ride for free. If you are in a single occupancy vehicle, you can pay a toll to ride in this lane.

The logistics of how this will be implemented escape me. What if you have a transponder card, but sometimes are in a carpool? This sounds like a bad combination of “lexus lane” and honor system. But it’s coming this spring to a congested freeway near you.

Fireworks lead to violence

Thursday, July 5th, 2007

Fireworks are illegal in the city of Renton, but in local Skyway they are unincorporated and able to set off fireworks. Apparently they were loud. And very annoying.

Someone opened fire

And the shooter must not have been the only one annoyed. Paramedics found the crowd so hostile they had to remove the wounded man in order to be able to continue performing CPR. He eventually died.

Free drop-in activities for kids in Renton

Monday, July 2nd, 2007

This sounds promising. It is not the kind of day-camp that is a substitute for child-care, but there is a lot for kids here. Six Renton parks have a free drop-in program for kids age 6-12. The four Summerfest 2007 parks have hours Monday-Thursday 10AM - 6PM. “Children are free to come and go as they please. Child care is not provided”.

These four are part of “SummerFest 2007″ and share the same hours.

Club North Highlands is at North Highlands Neighborhood Center. The hours are Monday - Friday 5PM - 9PM.

Club Highlands at the Highlands Neighborhood Center asks you to sign a membership card, and then has drop-in activities Monday-Friday 11AM-7PM and Saturday 11AM-5PM.

About-RentonWA tracks local events and announcements that are important to residents of Renton and southeast King County. This blog will be updated at least daily during the week, so stop by often. I have two young children, and will focus on free or inexpensive family activities, or sometimes just the random things I find interesting. I would love to hear from you, if you have any tips or suggestions for me.
