City of Renton Housing Repair Assistance Program

by Lynn Glessner

oldhouse.jpgThe City of Renton has a Housing Repair Assistance Program to help low/moderate income homeowners maintain their homes. Most applications are approved approximately two weeks after all required documents are received by their office. To qualify for free repair services, the homeowner must:

1) Be a homeowner/occupant within the city limits for at least one year
2) Complete the application process
3) Have an income not greater than those listed:

Family size Max. Annual Income
1/$41,700
2/$47,700
3/$53,650
4/$59,600
5/$64,350
6/$69,150

Repairs & Services Provided Include:
Electrical: faulty lights, switches, or plugs.
Plumbing: faulty toilets, clogged drains, leaking faucets, faulty water heaters
Modification for disabilities: wheel chair ramps, grab bars, hand rails, application of non-skid surfaces, hand-held showerheads, bath seats
Safety: installation of smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms, and locksets
Other: service for faulty furnaces, faulty gutters, and roof leaks

These are health and safety issues, not cosmetic issues like painting. However, they will supply paint for a church group, service organization, or officially recognized neighborhood organization, so that those people may paint. Or, for any of the maintenance or repair work that they perform, they will provide materials so that the homeowner could do the work him/herself.

You must be a homeowner, not a renter. Additional requirements are that you have lived in the home for 12 months, the home is not currently for sale, and will not be for sale in the next 12 months. If you have a Renton address but are not in the city limits, you live in unincorporated King County and don’t qualify for this particular program. In unincorporated King County, you should call the King County Housing Repair hotline at 206-296-7640.

For more information call 425-430-6650 or email manthony@ci.renton.wa.us. You can download an application by going to www.rentonwa.gov and searching for HRAP.

About Renton, WA

About-RentonWA tracks local events and announcements that are important to residents of Renton and southeast King County. This blog will be updated at least daily during the week, so stop by often. I have two young children, and will focus on free or inexpensive family activities, or sometimes just the random things I find interesting. I would love to hear from you, if you have any tips or suggestions for me.
