Tolls on the Valley Freeway?

by

This was the first I had heard of it, but it’s been the works for a while. The concept is to change the carpoll lane from an HOV lane on Hwy 167 (aka the Valley Freeway) to an HOT lane. That would be “High-Occupancy/Toll” lane. If you are in a carpool or bus, you can ride for free. If you are in a single occupancy vehicle, you can pay a toll to ride in this lane.

The logistics of how this will be implemented escape me. What if you have a transponder card, but sometimes are in a carpool? This sounds like a bad combination of “lexus lane” and honor system. But it’s coming this spring to a congested freeway near you.
